“New year, new me” – the clichéd and overused phrase many of us have uttered in the company of friends and family, usually met with a mocking, unconvinced smile. It’s no lie that come this time every year, you’ll no doubt jostle for position in overcrowded gyms, full of people utterly hellbent on proving their relatives wrong. This year is different, they’ll say. You’ll see!
A week passes by, and by now, the less determined will walk into their local gym to discover it’s now a graveyard of empty promises, and smug bodybuilders – healthy people, to me and you.
Here at Centre Front, we’ve got a few tips to stay on track and keep motivated throughout your January fitness spree.
First things first – many of us see exercise as a chore that we just don’t have time for. It is essential that you incorporate exercise into your daily routine, in whatever way you can. For some it will be going to the gym before or after work, for others, it means walking your children to school or to the shops. Find something that accommodates your lifestyle and stick to it. Once you start to see it as just another part of your day, you’ll start to lose the negative attitudes towards exercise in general, and maybe even begin to enjoy the benefits it brings.
Don’t do it alone! While some people prefer to exercise alone, a friendly face encouraging you can work wonders! Set each other goals and make sure you stick to them! Failing that, music and the radio are widely documented motivators to help get you in the right mindset.
Finally, vary it up! Try new things. Keep your body on its toes, and you may find a new skill or hobby.
At the end of the day, stick to it! You’ll always be able to say “I told you so”…and isn’t that what it’s all about?
